Vazhakkai Varuval(Roast), Raw Banana Fry, Side Dish for Rice

Spicy Vazhakkai Roast aka Varuval, an easy Roasted Raw Banana recipe is perfectly Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. A great side dish for a Variety of Rice, Sambar, and Rasam and ready to serve in just 30 minutes or less! It’s a Perfect side dish for Thayir Sadam. Yam has lots of health benefits, a cheap tasty vegetable that you can make N number of dishes out of it. In all the above I love this Raw Banana Roast recipe in Amma’s Version in which she adds ground coconut paste very tasty and yummy side for Mor kuzhambu or Thakkali Kurma.

What is Vazhakkai Varuval?

Vazhakkai is the Tamil word for Raw Banana. Varuval means Roast. Diced Raw Bananas are cooked with spicy coconut masala and then roasted on a heavy pan preferably cast iron with spices until they are golden brown and crispy. Very minimal spice powders, quick and simple recipe to make the best Vazhakkai recipe.

Vazhakkai Varuval

Spicy Raw banana roast(vazhakkai Varuval) recipe made with freshly ground Coconut masala, so delicious with Rasam Sadam or Sambar Sadam.

Instructions
 

  • Take 2 medium-sized vazhakkai, peel the skin and slice them into semi-thick slices, not too thin or thick, and place them in a bowl of water to prevent oxidation.
  • Take 3 tbsp freshly grated coconut, 1 tsp fennel seeds, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp chili powder, and 1/2 tsp salt. 
  • Add 1/4 cup of water and grind it to a smooth paste. Add the ground masala to the banana, Mix well.
  • let it sit for 15 mins. After 15 mins, Heat a pan with 2 tbsp oil, fry the banana, cover, and cook on low to medium flame for 5 mins then fry without covering for a few more mins, to get an even golden color, stir in between. 
  • Once it becomes gold and crispy. Turn off the heat and transfer the Vazhakkai Varuval/ Raw Banana Roast to a serving bowl and serve hot

Notes

  1. Tips marinate it for a few mints for a better taste
  2. Fry it in medium flame for golden color
