Diwali Sweet Susiyam Recipe made with chana dal puranam. How to make Suzhiyam Recipe in Tamil. Idli batter Sweet Bonda recipe I posted long back Is a quick fix for traditional suzhiyam. This Maida Suzhiyam is Traditional Suzhiyam with a Twist. I think no intro is required for Suzhiyam. It’s a south Indian delicacy. May the name change in different states Sukhiyan in Malayalam, Poornalu in Telugu, and Sukkinunde in Kanada. Of Course, the preparation slightly differs but the end product looks the same.
I use to make it with Idli batter. But the traditional suzhiyam is made with ground dal and rice. We have a procedure that we need to keep oil and fry something on Diwali day. For the sake of formality, we fry only vadai and Suzhiyam rest all done a day before Diwali. This is the one Amma does in the morning at 3 am. Here I am sharing the Quick Suzhiyam recipe.

what is Suzhiyam?
Seeyam, Suzhiyam is the most famous Authentic festival dish of Tamil Nadu. For Diwali, Varalakshmi Nombu, and some festivals we make this. During Diwali, we make Suzhiyam and share it with neighbors. It’s a deep-fried Traditional sweet recipe made with channa dal, jaggery, and coconut stuffing. It is flavored with cardamom and dry ginger. Most of our new generation has forgotten this recipe of making Suzhiyan. let’s make the south Indian delicacy Sweet Suzhiyam during this Diwali and enjoy festival.

Suzhiyam Ingredients:
Outer dough Ingredients:
- 1 cup Maida
- 1 tbsp rice flour
- a pinch baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- ¾ to 1 cup of water
For Filling(puranam) we need:
- 1 cup chana dal(kadalaiparuppu)
- 3/4 cup of jaggery
- a pinch cardamom
- 1/2 cup fresh coconut
- 1 tsp ghee
- Oil for Frying

📝How to make Kadala Paruppu Puranam:
🌺Firstly we make Kadala Paruppu Puranum. Soak 1 cup chana dal for 30 mins drain the water add it to a pressure cooker. Add water just to immerse about ½ cup. Pressure cook it for 3 whistles and then switch off. Once cooked mash it well and add 1 cup jaggery let the jaggery melt.
🌺Add ¼ tsp cardamom, and 1/2 cup coconut mix well and make a thick paste. Finally, add a tsp ghee. That’s it puranam ready!
🌺Keep inside the fridge for 30 mins to 1 hours and then make small balls. You can make Puranam a day before Diwali and keep in fridge. Next day you can make Suzhiyam. You can make puran boli, suzhiyam, anything using this puranam.
📝How to make Suzhiyam Outer Batter:
🌺Take 1/2 cup maida, 1 tbsp rice flour, a pinch baking soda, ¼ tsp salt. Mix well.
🌺Add water little by little make a batter. The batter consistency should be bajji batter consistency. If you dip a spoon on the batter, it should coat nicely on it. This is the right stage. Heat the oil in medium flame, dip the small balls in maida batter and slowly drop inside the hot oil and fry both sides.
That’s it suzhiyam ready! Do try this for diwali!
