Madurai Urulai Kizhangu Pottalam, 🔥Spicy Potato Masala Parceled in Mandarai Ellai is a very popular dish from Madurai. Urulai Kizhangu potalam is too good with curd rice, Rasam rice, or even we can make masala dosa, Some people buy this from the shop and eat it as a snack too. Very tasty and delicious dish, all potato fans must try!

These Potato parcels are available in Madurai street side shops, people buy this whenever they don’t cook any side dishes at Home. This Parcel of Potato masala cost only 30 rupees and it tastes amazing worth buying. But if we make it at home it’s hygienic and healthy too. 

I am not going to share any memories of this recipe because I am a Thanjavur Ponnu. Honestly, I never tasted the pottlam urulai kizhangu. My friend Ashok(chief chef in Le Meridian) spoke about this recipe many times. He shared the secrets too how Exactly they make and how they pack everything. What is Pottlam Urulai Kizhangu/Madurai Kilangu Pottalam?

Pottlam Means “PARCEL” in Tamil. Urualai Kizhangu which is Potatoes is boiled and then cooked with Onion, Tomatoes, with a hint of Moong dal. Finally, we will get a thick Potato Masala, this hot and spicy potato masala Parcelled in Dried Leaf, sold in Roadside Shops in Madurai City called Kilangu Pottalam. Day by Day it is also called pottlam kilangu, Kilangu Pottlam, etc.,

Maduri Kilangu Pottalam Recipe, Spicy Potato Masala Parcel

Ingredients
  

  • 300 g Potatoes
  • 1 tbsp Yellow Split Moong dal(Pasiparuppu)
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 2 onions finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes finely chopped
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 green chilies finely chopped
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp corinader powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions
 

  • Pressure cook 3 potatoes(300g), along with 1 tbsp yellow split moong dal + 1/4 cup of water for 3 whistles. Once cooked peel the skin of the potatoes, mash roughly, and keep aside. Also, mash the moong dal, keep aside.
  • Heat a Kadai, and add 2 tbsp oil, once the oil gets heated add 1 tsp mustard seed, 1 tsp chana dal, and 1 tsp fennel seeds, and let the mustard seeds splutter.Same time chana dal needs to turn golden(keep in low flame).
  • Add 2 onions finely chopped, and saute till it turns soft(don't brown or golden the onion. Add 2 tomatoes, and green chili and saute well. Till the tomatoes turn mushy.
  • Add ¼ tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp chili powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, and 1 tsp salt. Cover and cook till oil separates.
  • Now add the boiled potatoes, and dal and mix well. Saute for 5 mins and then switch off. Spicy Potato masala is ready to make packet.
  • Making packet is just for presentation. You can enjoy with poori, chapathi too

Step-by-step Madurai Kizhangu Pottalam recipe,

Tips to make Perfect Pottlam Urulaikizhangu Masala,

🔥The secret Ingredient is moong dal always mash and add it also add only 1 tbsp not more than that. Adding Cooked Moong dal gives a taste to masala don’t miss it.

🔥onion, tomatoes, chili everything should be finely chopped also don’t overcook the onion.

🔥Fennel seed is the main ingredient Don’t skip otherwise you will not get the flavor.
