Ramadan Kareem🌙 to all. Yummy Nombu Kanji made using Seeraga samba rice, spices, onions, tomatoes, garlic, and vegetables called Biryani Nombu Kanji. சைவ நோன்பு கஞ்சி means Vegetarian Nombu Kanji in Tamil. This porridge is as healthy as Kambu Koozh and Pazhaya Sadham. I will say Nombu kanji most sumptuous, filling breakfast. I tried the Nonbu kanji from Jaleela kamal Akka’s blog(Samaiyal Attagasam). That recipe was published in Kumudam Thozhi magazine. It’s a very good recipe. Do try this out.
1 cup of Nombu kanji and a Paruppu Vadai is enough to break the fast. Very famous dish among Muslim Families and it tastes yum! I never get a chance to taste this. Akka told me to try this as she has the vegetarian version and I made it for our Breakfast. There are many ways to make the Nombu kanji, Nombu kanji with vegetables without any masala, Nombu kanji with non-veg, spicy Nombu Kanji and now today am sharing the Biryani Nombu Kanji which taste exactly like Briyani in semiliquid form✔🤷♂️
An iftar without porridge is incomplete💖Nombu kanji is a fulfilling and satisfying meal. Mosques distribute the kanji before the sunset prayers during the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims observe fasting during the day time for 30 days. The reason behind is to feed the poor a day!
Nombu kanji (நோன்பு கஞ்சி) recipe video:
Nombu Kanji recipe, Biryani Nonbu Kanji using Seerasamba rice:
- ½ cup seeraga samba rice
- 2 tbsp moong dal
- 1 tbsp chana dal
- ½ tsp methi seeds(vendhayam)
- ½ cup thick coconut milk + 1 cup water
- 1.5 cup of mixed vegetables
- 1 medium-sized onion, sliced
- 1 tomato chopped
- 2 green chili
- 1 tbsp garlic minced
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp ghee
- 1-inch cinnamon stick
- 2 cloves
- 2 cardamom
- 1 bay leaves
- coriander leaves for garnishing
- soak the rice+dal+vendayam for 1 hour.
- Heat a pressure cooker. add 2 tbsp ghee and add cinnamon stick, cardamom, clove and saute well.
- add the chopped onion, tomato, green chili, garlic, and potato saute till the raw smell goes off.
- now add the rice+dal mix and 4 cups water, salt, coriander leaves & coconut milk.
- Pressure cook it for 4 to 5 whistles.
- Adjust water to a porridge consistency. serve the kanji with vada, samosa, or any snacks.
you can add vegetables of your choice.
you can use noi arisi instead of seeraga samba rice. But taste won't be same.
Not add more water while cooking because excess water will come out and place become mess.
adjust and salt and spice level according to your tastebuds.
Ramadan Nombu Kanji recipe, Ramzan Nonbu Kanji step by step preparation method:
step: 1 first, wash & soak the rice+dal+vendayam for 1 hour.
Heat a pressure cooker. add 2 tbsp ghee and add cinnamon stick, cardamom, clove and saute well.
add the chopped onion, tomato, green chili, garlic, and potato saute till the raw smell goes off.
now add the rice+dal mix and 4 cups water, salt, coriander leaves & coconut milk.
Pressure cook it for 4 to 5 whistles.
Adjust water to a porridge consistency. serve the kanji with vada, samosa, or any snacks.
