This Sweet Somas recipe is a Fool-Proof Recipe tried and tested many times in my kitchen and the video I have shared 2020 many tried and sent the picture.

What is Somas?

Somas is a special sweet prepared during the festivals like Diwali, Ugadi, Holi, etc., and is one of the very popular Tamil Nadu Diwali sweet recipes. Somas are known as Karchikai or Somasi in Tamil, Karanji in Maharashtra, and Kajjikayalu in Andhra Pradesh. The outer cover is made with Maida and Delicious fillings like roasted gram dal(pottukadalai), grated coconut, sugar, cardamom flavor, etc. No Diwali is complete without making Somas.

Traditional Diwali sweet Somas with tips and tricks, Detailed Video in Tamil:

Sweet Somas Ingredients:

Outer dough Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Maida
  • 2 tbsp Rava
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • ¾ to 1 cup of water

For Filling we need:

  • ¼ cup roasted gram dal(pottukadalai)
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  • 2 cardamom
  • 1 clove ¼ cup fresh coconut(i used desiccated coconut)
  • Oil for Frying

How to make Sweet somas:

Outer Cover Preparation:

  • Take 2 cups maida, 2 tbsp Rava, 2 tbsp ghee, and salt in a mixing bowl, mix it well and crumble the flour with your hands.
  • Mix well then add water little by little(approximately ¾ cup water) to make a stiff dough Knead for at least 5 to 10mins. Let it rest for 30 min minimum. .Keep covered and Set aside.

Let’s prepare the filling:

  • Take ¼ cup Roasted gram dal, ¼ cup sugar, 3 cardamoms, and 1 clove in a mixer and grind it to a coarse powder. Set aside.
  • Dry roast coconut for a few mins until slightly golden, Cooldown Mix fried gram dal powder and powdered sugar and add roasted coconut after cooling down completely. Mix well, Set aside. filling ready!

How to shape Sweet Somas:

  • Take a big ball bigger than lemon size. Roll it into a thin circle. Now using a lid cut into small thin circles.
  • Take a circle, and add a tbsp of the sweet stuffing. Pull the other side and close it, such that it looks like a semicircle.
  • Press and seal it. You can use a cutter to cut the edges or any mold. Now repeat the process for the remaining dough. Keep the prepared somas covered till you fry.

Frying the Somas

  • Heat the oil. you can check by pinching a small portion of dough and dropping it into the oil, if it rises immediately then your oil is ready Slowly drop the prepared somas into the oil, don’t flip immediately.
  • Wait for 2 seconds & then flip so that it will puff up well. Once the somas become crispy and light golden remove them from the oil.
  • That’s it Cripsy Somas is ready to Serve!
