Thought of share this family favorite Kathirika Murungakkai Puli Kootu recipe, it goes well with rice topped with some sesame oil. Today I made Sirukeerai Poriyal which is a yummy combo with this curry. You can simply try with papad or Omelet.

How to make kathirika murungakkai puli thokku for rice, delicious thick gravy made with drumstick and brinjal

Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 dried red chiles
  • 10 shallots
  • 10 garlic
  • curry leaves
  • ⅓ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1 & ½ tbsp coriander powder
  • hing
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 small lemon sized tamarind soaked in ½ cup water extract the juice
  • 2 drumstick
  • 200g brinjal
  • 1 tsp karupatti or jaggery
  • 1 tsp sesame oil for final serving
Instructions
  1. Soak 1 India Lemon-sized Tamarind in ½ cup of water for 15 mins and then extract the juice and keep aside. Don't add more water or 2nd extract not required. Only Extract the thick juice and keep it aside.
  2. Heat 2 tbsp sesame oil(gives nice flavor), add 1 tsp mustard seeds, 2 dried red chilies, hing.
  3. Add shallot, garlic, and curry leaves fry well till they turn soft
  4. Add the tomatoes, saute well. Cover and cook for 2 to 3 mins, till the tomatoes turn mushy.
  5. Add chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt saute for a while, and then add the Brinjal and Drumstick saute well.
  6. Add the thick tamarind extract, cover, and cook for 10 mins.
  7. You can pressure cook for 2 whistles and then switch off
  8. kathirika murungakkai puli thokku is ready to serve.
  9. Serve it with hot steaming rice, drizzled with Ghee or sesame oil.
Notes
For thick gravy-like thokku consistency, add thick tamarind juice Don't add more water
Add Jaggery at the final step gives nice color and shine to the gravy also enhances the taste too.

Important Step: Soak 1 India Lemon-sized Tamarind in 1/2 cup of water for 15 mins and then extract the juice and keep aside. Don’t add more water or 2nd extract not required. Only Extract the thick juice and keep it aside.
Heat 2 tbsp sesame oil(gives nice flavor), add 1 tsp mustard seeds, 2 dried red chilies, hing.
Add shallot, garlic, and curry leaves fry well till they turn soft
Add the tomatoes, saute well. Cover and cook for 2 to 3 mins, till the tomatoes turn mushy.
Add chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt saute for a while or till the raw smell goes.

Once the oil started to separate at the corners, add the Brinjal and Drumstick saute well.

Add the thick tamarind extract, cover, and cook for 10 mins(don’t add water). You can pressure cook for 2 whistles, open the lida add Jaggery or Karupatti, cook in low flame for 2 mins and then switch off. kathirika murungakkai puli thokku is ready to serve.
Serve it with hot steaming rice, drizzled with Ghee or sesame oil.

Tips and Variations:

If you are Allergic to Tomatoes or Brinjal skip both. You can add veggies like mango, potato, ladies finger

Pressure cooker save the cooking time and also the vegetables mash very easily which is good for thokku so try to make in a pressure cooker

Adding sesame oil gives a nice flavor don’t skip it

all of the above tamarind extracts should be very thick otherwise you will not get this consistency.

Adding Jaggery at the last step enhances the taste of the thokku so doesn’t skip it.
