Vetrilai Sadam Recipe using homegrown vethalai, choose the betel leaves tender and light green in color. Dark leaves taste bitter. The leaves count is up to your tastebuds, you can use as much you want. Also, don’t overcook the leaves it will lose their nutrients.
Recipe Card For How to make Betel leaves Garlic rice/வெற்றிலை பூண்டு சதாம்
- betel leaves 4 chopped
- 10 to 15 garlic
- 10 cashews or peanut
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- ½ tsp urad dal
- 2 tsp oil
- 2 dried red chilies
- 1 tsp pepper powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup of cooked rice
- Vetrillai Poondu Sadam recipe, take good tender leaves with light green color (dark leaves taste bitter), chop it. Take 10 to 15 garlic cloves and peel skin.
- Take 1 cup of Cooked rice, cool down completely. Heat a pan with 2 tsp oil, add 1 tsp mustard seeds, ½ tsp urad dal, a few cashews or peanuts, dried red chili fry well. Add the garlic fry well till it turns soft in low flame.
- Add Chopped Vetrilliai toss well.
- Add 1 tsp pepper powder, 1 tsp cumin powder, ½ tsp salt mix well.
- Add the cooked rice and toss well in high flame for 2 mins and then switch off the stove.
- That’s it Vetriallai sadam ready. Vetrialai sadam goes well with potato fry.

Step By Step Vetrilai Sadam Recipe:
take good tender leaves with light green color (dark leaves taste bitter), chop it. Take 10 to 15 garlic cloves and peel skin.
Take 1 cup of Cooked rice, cool down completely. Heat a pan with 2 tsp oil, add 1 tsp mustard seeds, ½ tsp urad dal, a few cashews or peanuts, dried red chili fry well till it turns golden. Add the garlic fry well till it turns soft in low flame.
Add Chopped Vetrilliai toss well.
Add 1 tsp pepper powder, 1 tsp cumin powder, ½ tsp salt mix well.
Add the cooked rice and toss well in high flame for 2 mins and then switch off the stove.
That’s it Vetriallai sadam ready. Vetrialai sadam goes well with potato fry.
Tips to make tasty Vetrilai Poondu sadam:
- If you are taking for post-delivery avoid potatoes,
- use more garlic preferably use the hill garlic, and avoid leftover rice.
- There is no count for betel leaves, you can add as much you want to make sure it’s tender.
