Drumstick(Murungai Keerai) leaves Poriyal my moms style without dal

Nutritional Values are very rich in Drumstick leaves.My mom use drumstick leaves in most of the dishes like dosa,sambar,rasam,etc.She will prepare simple drumstick leaves poriyal,Paruppu Urundai Kuzhambu and masal vadai,using drumstick leaves.These are my favorite food which i like more in my mom’s cooking.Here is the recipe for simple Drumstick leaves Poriyal.Later i will post the Paruppu urundai kuzhambu and masal vadai using drumstick leaves. 

While choosing the drumstick leaves choose the tender leaves which is in light green.It is very easy to clean the leaves,if you remove it from the backward direction.You can clean it whenever you find time like while watching tv,etc…Wrap them in a news paper and keep it in fridge.It will be fresh for a week.Wash well and drain it before using.

Drumstick leaves Poriyal(முருங்கை கீரை பொரியல்):


1 bunch drum stick leaves
1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
1/3 tsp Urad Dal
1 dry Red Chilly
2-3 Small Onion Chopped finely
1 tbsp Grated Coconut
1 tsp Oil
Salt as Needed


  •  Wash well and drain the drumstick leaves,keep aside.Heat oil in a kadai, add the mustard seeds, urad dal and dry red chilli,let it to splutter.
  • Now add the onion,washed and drained drum stick leaves, salt and saute for 3mins. 

  •  Sprinkle little water, cover and cook for 5-8mins.
  • After the excess water evaporates, add the grated coconut and saute for 2mins.Now the tasty drumstick poriyal is ready.
