Sakkarai Pongal is a traditional sweet which can be made in South Indian homes. Traditional Sakkarai pongal,can be make in an earthen pot or vengala panai (Tamil) on the Pongal festival. We use to keep 2 vengala panai on stove one is for milk Pongal (Paal Pongal ) and the other one is for sakkarai Pongal (sweet Pongal). It’s really very tasty if we make Pongal is made in panai than in pressure cooker only thing is that panai takes more time than a pressure cooker. Every year I will make Pongal and will send to my friends home also. But all became health conscious now a dayHappy. Even my family members refuse to take rice. Let see step by step method for Samai Sakkarai Pongal,

Step 1: Heat a tsp of ghee in a pan and fry the cashews and raisins.Once it turns golden take it out and then fry the moong dal in the same pan,till slightly golden.

Step 2: Then pressure cook samai rice and fried dal with enough water till it become soft.

step 3: Add the cooked dal and rice mix in a pan or kadai, add in the crushed jaggery(you can add the jaggery syrup) cardamom powder and nut meg,mix well.

step 4: Once the pongal start thick consistancy add in the fried cashews and raisins.

step 5: Finally add in the remaining ghee and serve hot:)

  • ½ cup samai
  • ⅓ cup moong dal
  • 5 raisins
  • 5 cashews
  • 2 and ½ tbsp ghee
  • 1 and ¾ cup water(cooking the dal n rice)
  • ½ cup grated jaggery
