How to Perform Thaipusam Viratham:
There are strict rules if you are going to wear Malai like Iyyappa Malai, but if you are not wearing the malai, there are no strict rules;
- Have only vegetarian food
- Take a bath and pray every day, chant Kanda Shasti Kavasam, or just listen to Murugan songs
- If possible, go nearest Murugan Temple
- Do your work and spend some time in prayer.
- Every day, light 1 diya, so 48 days 48 diya, or you can light 1 lamp also

- Can we perform a 48-day Vratham? No, not compulsory, we can also do 1 day also it completely depends on each person.
- Can we have onion and garlic in these fasting days? No particular food restrictions, but make sure vegetarian, clean eating.
- Do we eat only fruits and milk? As I said before, no food restriction, but some people skip breakfast and dinner, some will have 3 times too. I will have only lunch, I skip breakfast and dinner.
- Can we do fasting during our Periods? Strictly no if you are wearing the Malai, but if you are not wearing the Malai you can continue and ask someone in the house to do prayers.
- Can pregnant ladies fast? My advice have healthy vegetarian food, don’t skip any meals, and pray to Lord Muruga.
