Vilakku Poojai(Aadi Velli Special), Detailed Procedures and slokas

Aadi velli are the auspicious Fridays that fall in the Aadi month. Many perform different types of pooja at home. As a Tamilian, we used to light lamps in various forms. Like the First week, we lit the Maa Vilakku and all the lamps we have in the house. After we light the lamp, we perform pooja, which is considered a way of inviting Maa Lakshmi Devi into the home and making her sit in the form of diyas. Once we have been invited, we will offer flowers, fruits, and some neivedyam. Some people perform this villakku pooja on all 5 aadi vellis, or the 1st or 5th. Let me share how I perform Vilakku Pooja at Home, and what I recite while doing Pooja and the Neivedyam recipes.
What is Vilakku Poojai?
Vilakku means lamp, and “Pooja” means worship. Worshipping the lamp/diya is called Vilakku Pooja. It symbolizes the divine light and energy. By doing this Vilakku Pooja on an auspicious day, we are bringing the Mahalakshimi home and making her stay in our house in the form of a Lamp. By performing this pooja, it is believed that it brings good health, wealth, and peace to the family. Married women can perform this pooja for their husband’s wellness, and unmarried girls/boys to get a good husband/wife.
When can we perform this Vilakku Pooja?
It’s preferably in the evening time around 5:45 pm, or the morning, 10:30 am to 12 pm. Usually, in temples, they perform in the evening. We can do not only on Aadi Friday, or on Thai Velli or any Fridays.

How to Perform Vilakku Pooja and Procedure?
I am not going to tell an elaborate or grand pooja method; this is a very simple and easy one that anyone can easily perform at home. No need to buy expensive items, whatever is available at home, we can use it, and the only thing we need to do is with full faith and devotion.
- Clean the Pooja Room, including the Vilakku/diya. Any type of diya is acceptable, such as clay, brass, etc., but not stainless steel. Place haldi bunkum (Manjal Kungumam) and also clean bronze, or silver, all the God photos.
- Put Ghee in all the lamps, cotton wicks, and decorate with flowers.
- Place a Kolam (rangoli) on a banana leaf or plate, and keep a diya on top of it. Light the diya.
- Break the coconut and keep both sides. If you have betel leaves, banana, or any fruits, you can keep.
- If you can make any neivedyam like sakkarai pongal, Appam, Vadai, payasam, anything is ok.
- First, start doing the pooja for Ganapathy. Read this Ganesh sloka, put flowers for Ganesha(manjal Pillaiyar), then start doing the pooja for Vilakku. Here is the Vilakku Pooja Slogam. put flowers for the Vilakku while chanting this, and then kunguma archanai chant 108 Amman Potri while saying this offer kungumam to Vilakku.
- Finally, offer Nei Appam and Vadai as Neivedyam and finish the pooja by taking the Aarti.
Here is the Virtual Aarti for you all. Praying the wellness for each and everyone! Shubahm!!
Dos & Don’t:
- You can use any diya, but not stainless steel. Use only ghee & cotton wick to light the Lamp.
- Slokas light Ganesh Potri, Gayathri & Lakshmi Ashothram, or Ashtalakshmi Slokas, we can recite.
- If we don’t know how to chant, we can just listen to the audio, more than following the procedures. How much Bhakthi & Shraddha we are doing the pooja is important.
