Nombu kanji (நோன்பு கஞ்சி), Biryani Nonbu Kanji using Seerasamba rice

A sumptuous, filling Biryani Nombu kanji (நோன்பு கஞ்சி) to break the fast. This Porridge made with seera samba rice, spices, onions, tomatoes, garlic, and vegetables.

Ingredients
  • ½ cup seeraga samba rice
  • 2 tbsp moong dal
  • 1 tbsp chana dal
  • ½ tsp methi seeds(vendhayam)
  • ½ cup thick coconut milk + 1 cup water
  • 1.5 cup of mixed vegetables
  • 1 medium-sized onion, sliced
  • 1 tomato chopped
  • 2 green chili
  • 1 tbsp garlic minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1-inch cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 cardamom
  • 1 bay leaves
  • coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions
  1. soak the rice+dal+vendayam for 1 hour.
  2. Heat a pressure cooker. add 2 tbsp ghee and add cinnamon stick, cardamom, clove and saute well.
  3. add the chopped onion, tomato, green chili, garlic, and potato saute till the raw smell goes off.
  4. now add the rice+dal mix and 4 cups water, salt, coriander leaves & coconut milk.
  5. Pressure cook it for 4 to 5 whistles.
  6. Adjust water to a porridge consistency. serve the kanji with vada, samosa, or any snacks.
Notes
Soaking the dal+rice saves the cooking time as well as we will get the soft and creamy texture of the Nombu Kanji.
you can add vegetables of your choice.
you can use noi arisi instead of seeraga samba rice. But taste won't be same.
Not add more water while cooking because excess water will come out and place become mess.
adjust and salt and spice level according to your tastebuds.
